Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gis have different sizing to regular clothing. Rather than use a system with product dimensions, measurements or regular sizing, gis use a letter and number combination like A3 or F2.
The letter refers to whether the size is a mens, womens or kids size. Different companies might use different letters, but generally:
A refers to adults or mens sizes
W or F refers to womens sizing
C, K, M or Y can be used for kids sizing
As the number gets larger, the sleeve length, pants length and jacket length increase.
Size charts between BJJ gi brands differ, so you may be an A2 in many brands but an A1 or even an A3 in some brands. Below are the size charts for some of the more popular gi brands.

Frequently asked questions about BJJ gi sizes
What if I’m between sizes?
This depends on how you want your gi to fit and your chosen gi brand. Most gi brands encourage customers to email them for sizing recommendations so you can email them to find out what they think.
Generally, if you like your gi more fitted, consider picking the smaller size. If you want your gi a bit looser, select the bigger size. Also check the gi brand’s website as many gi brands make their sizes slightly bigger, which could factor into your decision.
Pre-shrunk and shrink-to-fit
Most gis on the market today are pre-shrunk, meaning they’ve undergone a treatment during manufacturing which reduces shrinkage after you use and wash it.
Pre-shrunk doesn’t mean your gi will not shrink at all after usage and washing. Different brands have different expected shrinkage amounts for their gis even if you wash your gi according to their recommendations:
If a gi is not pre-shrunk it may shrink more after washing, especially if you wash your gi in hot water or use a dryer instead of hanging it to dry. Be sure to follow your gi brand’s care instructions closely if you don’t want your gi to shrink further.
